A major network disruption that impacted AAPT enterprise fibre customers across Australia has been resolved, following a morning of widespread connectivity issues that knocked corporate services offline.
The disruption began around 10:00 am AEST on Friday, 12 June 2026. Network monitoring and user reports indicated severe connection instability, with links “flapping” (rapidly disconnecting and reconnecting) every few minutes, disrupting corporate VPNs and remote operations for businesses nationwide.
Scope of the Outage
While initial reports focused on corporate fibre links being down in New South Wales and Victoria, the outage quickly expanded to a national level. The incident was designated as Case NOC-255103 (Severity 3), affecting data and voice services across all Australian states and territories:
The outage also impacted downstream providers and broader infrastructure, with connectivity issues reported at NextDC data centres and across various corporate NBN connections managed by retail service providers like Future Broadband.
The high volume of traffic and system dependency also triggered secondary failures, with “502 Bad Gateway” and “504 Gateway Time-out” errors when attempting to access Vocus’ management portal.
Root Cause and Resolution
The disruption was tied to a Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) routing issue rather than a physical infrastructure failure. At 11:31 am AEST, Vocus released a technical update explaining that a global routing table increase overnight had caused some BGP sessions to reach their configured prefix limits.
This prefix limit breach triggered widespread BGP flapping across multiple border routers within the Vocus core network (AS2764). Because BGP is the core routing protocol directing internet traffic between different networks, the continuous, rapid updates to the routing tables prevented stable paths from being established.
The incident was successfully resolved at 11:34 am AEST after IP Engineering rolled back the triggering change. All peering links and services have been restored to a stable state.
